The problem is the values people like Serwotka don't share are the new Tory values of the people running the party, and it is precisely because they run the party that Corbyn is standing for election so that the old values might be restored. However, many would now consider the Wilson Government of the 60s was riddled with political compromises. You could claim that the most radical socialist government (and only Labour one) was Atlee's in 1945, and the second most left wing one was the Coalition Government of WW2.

I personally would rate Liz Kendall as someone who would fit easily into the Heath Government, but also Yvette Cooper & Andy Burnham as slotting neatly into ANY Labour government after 1960. Even Corbyn would have been tolerated in most (as Benn and Skinner were, though without ministerial portfolio) though probably marginalised after 1997.TiddKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06194335182530169873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-34836382172431172222015-08-24T20:19:34.126+01:002015-08-24T20:19:34.126+01:00Eisenhower and blimey even Nixon would be consider...Eisenhower and blimey even Nixon would be considered raving lefties economically nowadays (social liberalism is now a done debate).Andy Blatchfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05196261322445607791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-61341008240834735402015-08-24T20:16:07.973+01:002015-08-24T20:16:07.973+01:00I think you can go even further back & into US...I think you can go even further back & into US politics,Eisenhower a Republican would be considered a raving lefty by todays window...blimey you could even say the same about Nixon.Andy Blatchfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05196261322445607791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-10341259664312771342015-08-18T17:52:37.782+01:002015-08-18T17:52:37.782+01:00Labour try to run the whole gamut of the political...Labour try to run the whole gamut of the political spectrum, trying to contain a left or centre-left party behind a centre-right façade. I think it was Will Self who recently said this party have to split, as probably do the Conservatives. If we had a fair voting system the present two party monopoly could be broken down into six, seven or eight parties in a way that would give a fair voice to every major strand of opinion. One of the may flaws in the present voting system is that is squeezes lots of disperate factions into one party and the public don't always get to see the true face of any of them.New Republicnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-60726279606888415572015-08-01T10:54:17.317+01:002015-08-01T10:54:17.317+01:00I have just read about the passing of a dear frien...I have just read about the passing of a dear friend, Lee Lynch. The only anti-austerity party which is likely to win a significant number of seats at this election is the SNP, and as I pointed out in the article there will be no gain to the Tories from Labour voters switching to the SNP.

2. The other point I made in the article is that there is never a "right" time to fight for change, because as soon as this election ends the next one begins, and then the imperative is to fight either to get the Tories out or to prevent them from getting back in.

With the unique situation in Scotland, now is surely as good a time as we're ever going to get?Phil Andrewshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11189427887730688723noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-60112846310997102182015-04-20T21:10:01.007+01:002015-04-20T21:10:01.007+01:00whilst I agree with the sentiment I am a massive b...whilst I agree with the sentiment I am a massive believer in this current labour under ed miliband. I am not a permanently blinkered towards labour and would much prefer a real socialist option. But unfortunately doing anything other than voting labour will result in another five years of Tory government. Unfair? Yes but we cannot provide a better one! Perhaps under labour the working classes will benefit from a little breathing space in which to continue fighting for a better system. Right now the priority for me is preventing Tory rule, and then continue the fight for better systems, much like the occupy movement did.James Gedgenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-63548118198641824182015-03-29T14:42:39.826+01:002015-03-29T14:42:39.826+01:00A good article Phil. Whatever is going on in the peripheries, only one of two establishment parties can ever call the shots in government in the UK. The voting system ensures it. And while that is the case, no imperative to change that system could ever take hold where it matters. Once NOTA is in place (achievable as it is a democratic pre-requisite that cannot be argued against without arguing against democracy itself, once both concepts are properly understood), THEN that imperative could take hold. Only then will the two party system truly be in jeopardy, in my view. http://www.notauk.orgJamie Stanleyhttp://www.notauk.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-7118877147472739692015-03-11T22:39:43.131+00:002015-03-11T22:39:43.131+00:00And so it goes on History repeating itself, who wa...And so it goes on History repeating itself, who was it that said yr never pls all the ppl all the time?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17287607231782776053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-61463868893342707352015-03-06T17:58:23.792+00:002015-03-06T17:58:23.792+00:00Very deep, but the Green's have it!?Very deep, but the Green's have it!?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17287607231782776053noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-16271916893550799432015-03-06T11:20:23.669+00:002015-03-06T11:20:23.669+00:00Just another bunch of ambitious neoliberals who ca...Just another bunch of ambitious neoliberals who cannot be trusted any more than the other bunch.samnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837262994617763803.post-17918635118592563172015-02-26T00:00:16.844+00:002015-02-26T00:00:16.844+00:00The horse owner should sue the council for its mis...The horse owner should sue the council for its mis-handling of this affair.
